What is silicone?
Silicones are polymers, which are large molecules made up of many repeating subunits. These polymers are made up of siloxane - a chain of alternating silicon atoms and oxygen atoms, often combined with carbon and/or hydrogen. Silicone is an element found in sand, where it is extracted from and passes through hydrocarbons.
Why is silicone more expensive than other rubbers?
Because it is made from sand, silicone is the second most abundant element on earth, yet despite its ready availability, the cost is relatively high compared to other rubbers such as natural rubber, neoprene, and EPDM. This is because the process of converting sand into silicone is expensive. In addition, silicone, while popular, is not as widely used as some other materials, so economies of scale are small. For many companies, however, the cost of silicone is easily justified because it is the best-in-class elastomer for extreme temperature environments where other rubbers simply won't work.
